Art @ the SPL: Old World Streets – Photographer Jack Holmes

During the months of January and February, 2020, the Galleries at Lynn Arts (GALA) and the Saugus Public Library present Old World Streets, featuring fine photography by Jack Holmes. Jack’s work will be on display in the First Floor Reading Room at the SPL. We will hold a meet & greet with Jack at the Library on Sunday, January 19th, from 1 to 3 pm. The event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. Come meet the artist, view his works, and spend some time with other art, travel, and photography lovers.

Jack shoots with both digital and film cameras.  The camera choice is determined by the conditions of the place where he is photographing.  All film images are scanned and converted to digital format. All digital images are polished with modern photo editing software for gallery presentation and for multimedia presentations.  He prints his fine art works with archival materials in his studio. One of his images, Violent Ballet, won a major prize with National Geographic in 2008.  His images have been used commercially and published internationally.

His work has been described by viewers as; “witty, and with an eye for unique scenes”.

“I shoot with two eyes.” says Jack.  “One is the documentary eye; the other is the fine art eye.  A digital photologue of my travel has to tell a story and give a sense of place.  Fine art pieces capture images that resonate with the familiar, and the exotic. I hope they find a place inside the viewer; a place that connects them to the image.”

Since retiring from teaching in 2006 from Lynn MA, Jack has maintained a working studio- gallery at Western Avenue Studios, 122 Western Avenue, Suite A207, Lowell, MA 01851.  His gallery, “Images From Near And Far”, shows small and large framed prints. The themed gallery hangings change periodically. He has fine art hangings have been exhibited in Lowell at the Loading Dock Gallery, The Whistler House Museum, and the ALL Gallery and in other museums and galleries.
